COSPAR's second Symposium, with the theme Water and Life in the Universe, will be held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.

In addition to the core program of oral and poster sessions, plenary talks, and keynote speeches, the symposium will include a teacher training event and a COSPAR Capacity Building Workshop on “Data Analysis of Space Missions”:

Interdisciplinary Scientific Lectures

  1. The water molecule: a broad perspective
  2. Water management and remote sensing
  3. Habitability and life
  4. Biodiversity and molecular unicity: are they needed for the emergence of life?

Keynote Speakers

  1. Water in the Solar System: results from ROSETTA
  2. Water and Organics from Interstellar Medium

Plenary Public Lecture

  1. Water and life support in space (given by an astronaut)

Sessions (oral and poster presentations)

  1. Space astronomy missions to detect ingredients for life and exoplanets in the universe: status of current and future approved missions and new proposals
  2. Water and life in the universe and on Earth: impact on human consciousness and societies
  3. Satellite and probe missions for water remote sensing on Earth, planets, and other celestial bodies
  4. Water and Life in the Solar System
  5. Water from chemical, biological, and physical perspectives
  6. Role of water from the ground to the upper atmosphere
  7. Astrobiology: habitability, synthesis of organics in ice, and prebiotic chemistry in liquid water
  8. Water, organics and life support for human exploration in low Earth orbit, the Moon and beyond

Foz do Iguaçu, with its immense and impressive water falls as well as ITAIPU, the dam with the greatest hydroelectric power production in the world, is a most appropriate, indeed an ideal spot for a Symposium broadly addressing the topics of water and life. The city, for many decades a magnet for tourists, is a regular host to large international meetings and well-located on the border between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay with easy and direct access from many gateway cities in South America. COSPAR Associates in relevant fields are encouraged to block their calendars for this Symposium which promises not only excellent science but also a truly unique setting and look forward to seeing many of you at the Falls in November 2015.
